Gemini now chooses models automatically for free users

Conceptual illustration: automatically routing a request between different models.

Gemini users without a Google AI subscription are moving to automatic model selection instead of choosing a model themselves. Google's help page says the change began taking effect for personal accounts on October 9, 2026. Auto is the default: most prompts go to Flash-Lite, which Google describes as its fastest model, while prompts needing deeper reasoning may go to Flash or Pro.

The distinction is between possible access to a model and directly selecting it. Auto may use a different model for a request, but does not give free users a selector guaranteeing the same model every time. Auto therefore does not mean all answers come from one model, or that every complex question will necessarily reach Pro.

What happens when smart selection is disabled

Google says that when a user without a subscription turns off smart model selection, every answer uses Flash-Lite. The consequence is specific: disabling automatic routing neither restores the previous model selector nor locks the conversation to Pro. When assessing the change, distinguish the smart-selection setting from the content of an individual answer.

Practically, users can define the task and level of detail without assuming the system will choose a particular model. Asking for assumptions, solution steps or a result check clarifies the desired output. It does not guarantee routing. Answer quality still needs to be assessed against the task, especially when it involves figures, conclusions or information requiring a source.

Plus changes; Pro and Ultra retain all three models

Google AI Plus subscribers retain Flash-Lite and Flash. Pro is no longer clearly listed as available for this tier in Google's table. There is no common cutoff date for all subscribers: Google says Plus users will receive an email explaining when the change applies to their account. October 9 therefore refers to the start for users without a subscription, rather than every paid account.

Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers are unaffected by this change. They retain Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. Subscription and model names can resemble each other, making the correct table row important. A Plus subscription is different from a Pro subscription, and the word Pro appearing in an answer does not establish which plan is active on the account.

Model choice and usage allowances are also separate questions. October's update concerns model availability and routing. It should not be interpreted as unlimited usage or an announcement that every allowance rule changed that day. For a free user, the main change is simple: Gemini makes the routing decision, and switching off smart selection leaves every response on Flash-Lite.
